About Leo Ureña
Leo Ureña is a Costa Rican photographer, graphic designer, and publisher. The series Squares Within Squares depicts his mixed creative genres, as the images are composed of photographs from different periods and locations. The shoots were between New York, San Josè in Costa Rica, and Mexico City.
The Squares Within Squares series alters the way we see things as the images themselves become frames. Ureña started shooting with his smartphone about six years ago, and it all started more as a curiosity for the visual and as a means of communicating with friends who were away.
As time passed by, he discovered that his passion for photography was growing as he continued to focus on light and composition.
“I focused on how the light was or how a certain composition could redefine what I was seeing and trying to elude subjects.”, he says.
The series of collages was firstly inspired by Ureña’s practice of editing and photographing. By the thought that combining various images, he could build creative language to depict complex situations visually.
It was all done very intuitively with the primary purpose of going further with the exploration of the possibilities you get from photography”, Leo Ureña says.
