Colbert shared the sad news but sprinkled a bit of humor while talking about his ruptured appendix. The comedian noted on social media in his statement that his show, “The Late Show,” won’t air this week due to his condition.

His statement read, “A message from Stephen: Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’”

“Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas,” Colbert joked.

While no show was planned for Monday, Colbert was set for a full week of guest stars for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday shows, so the news must be really disappointing for fans looking forward to some good TV.

Colbert was set to have music legend Barbara Streisand take “The Colbert Questionert.” Other celebrities to make an appearance include Jennifer Garner and Baz Luhrmann on Tuesday and Patrick Stewart on Wednesday. Multiple Grammy award-winning singer Jon Batiste was also slated to perform on the show and get interviewed by Colbert on Wednesday.

For Thursday, TV legend Kelsey Grammer was meant to make a stop to chat with Colbert about the reboot of his popular show, “Frasier.”

Fans Wish Stephen Colbert A Speedy Recovery

Fans of the talk show host took to the comment section of his post to wish him well amid his recovery from a ruptured appendix, and just like the comedian, they sprinkled some humor in their remarks.

One comment read, “That’s terrible. Your pancreas is in no way equipped to handle the duties of your appendix. May the force be with you.”

Another joked, “Will you PLEASE take better care of yourself and stop eating entire sticks of butter? I implore you. Or is it deplore?”

A fan asked to know if the show would still go on, saying, “Sorry about that and take good care and recover quickly! We’ll miss you! How about Jon Stewart or Elvis Costello stepping in during your absence????”

“Feel better! We love you and never miss a show! Looking forward to your return. Have a speedy recovery,” wrote a fourth individual.

He Recently Had Late Night Legend David Letterman On The Show

Colbert’s health emergency comes after a historic episode featuring the former “The Late Show” host, David Letterman.

Letterman made an appearance on the show last week, November 21, for the first time since his retirement in 2015. He told Colbert how much he missed the show, especially the musical guests and the chair.

Before ending his guest appearance, Letterman asked Colbert if he would allow him to have a seat behind the desk he had retired from after hosting for 33 years.

Colbert granted Letterman’s wish without hesitation. While sitting on the chair, the 76-year-old joked, “We do this because my son doesn’t believe I had a show.”

The predecessor and his successor then posed for a selfie, a callback to the one they took together in 2014 after Colbert was announced as Letterman’s replacement.
