Russell Dickerson has his hands full touring with his wife, Kailey Dickerson, and their two sons — but he wouldn’t change a thing.
“Life is just insane,” Russell, 37, exclusively told Us Weekly on the 2024 Country Music Association Awards red carpet in Nashville on Wednesday, November 20. “It’s in shambles, actually.”
The “God Gave Me a Girl” singer, who shares Remington, 4, and Radford, 13 months, with his wife, explained that since the family is renovating their house, they “threw all of our crap in a rental house and hit the road with Sam Hunt all summer.”
Although being on the road for months is hard, Russell said he had a blast showing his boys the sites. “We’ve had the absolute year of our lives,” he gushed. “We took the boys to Yosemite, we took the boys to [the] Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley. We took them on an Alaskan Disney Cruise.”
The musician noted that his sons won’t always be able to come on tour, so he and Kailey, 34, took advantage this time around. “We knew that this is a really special time to take the boys out and see the world,” he added.
The key to a successful adventure while working comes down to coordination, which Russell told Us is his wife’s department.
“Shout out to her because [when] we’re touring, I’m focused on that. So she’s the one focused on keeping our family together,” Russell said of Kailey, whom he married in 2013. “For the last two to three years, we’ve had our own family bus. It’s been a really special time while our kids are really young to, you know, wake up together.”
Russell explained that when he’s back home, he gets busy writing and recording “all the time.” But when he’s on the road, he said it’s when they “get that family time.”
For the country singer, that also means passing his love of music down to his kids, especially his eldest.
“Remy loves the drum set. He is like, ‘Can I come out on stage with you? Can I come sing a song with you?’” Russell recalled. “And I’m like, ‘I mean, you could,’ like, he’s in his jammies and his headphones and everything. It’s a ball. We’re living the dream.”
Now that the tour has wrapped, Russell said they are “coming back to the craziness” and finding their new normal, which means more music for fans.
“We put out Bones the EP a few weeks ago, and it’s been amazing to see the response from that,” he told Us of his latest musical achievement before adding, “I just dropped a song on Instagram like 10 minutes ago, so you can go check that out. It’s called, ‘Heard It in a Country Song.’ It’s a little vibey piece for the kids, for the troops.”
