Izumi Kato at Perrotin

AO is on-site at Perrotin, which inaugurated its new Los Angeles gallery with an exhibition featuring Japanese artist Izumi Kato, running from February 28 to March 23, 2024. Kato’s work, known for incorporating elements of both ancient traditions and modern themes, aligns with Los Angeles’s landscape, which includes both natural and urban environments. The artist’s figures, created in his Tokyo studio, are displayed in a setting that reflects the coexistence of contrasting elements, a theme prevalent in Kato’s art.

Kato’s artistic approach involves using simple geometries and biomorphic shapes, drawing inspiration from ancient petroglyphs and cave paintings as well as contemporary culture. He employs a variety of materials in his work, including natural substances like wood and stone and synthetic materials such as plastic and vinyl. Kato’s technique involves direct engagement with his materials, including painting with his hands and utilizing modern production methods. His figures often appear to transcend time, suggesting a connection to both the past and the future.

The exhibition at Perrotin’s Los Angeles gallery features Kato’s recent works, including sculptures and paintings. Among the highlights is a large fabric figure, over 17 feet tall, that is suspended in the gallery, as well as smaller plastic model kits that allow visitors to create miniature versions of Kato’s sculptures. These works showcase Kato’s use of diverse materials and his ability to engage with various forms of artistic expression.
