By all accounts, it’s shaping up to be a pretty spectacular restaurant year in the Twin Cities. We feel really good about the hospitality crews staking their claims with fresh ventures in the year ahead.
It looks like 2024 is the year that we get to see how the Gavin Kaysen machine works. Alumni from his kitchens are lighting their own fires and helping to build the new dining scene.
Bûcheron
Adam Ritter and Jeanie Janas are the Kaysen alums opening their first solo project in the former Corner Table space in Kingfield. Expect a nod to the bistronomy movement, which means accessible French food cooked with refined technique.
Diane’s Place
The pastry queen who spent years in fine dining (from La Belle Vie to Spoon and Stable, then Bellecour) is launching her own Hmong-style restaurant in the Food Building in Northeast Minneapolis next year. Cooking dishes that pay homage to her family’s farm with actual ingredients grown by her parents, Moua is stepping into the savory side of the kitchen.
Gia
Jo Seddon and Lisa Wengler met in the Bellecour kitchens just before the pandemic. The two chefs became fast friends, and after a smash-hit run at popping up in a vineyard, they’ll open their take on rustic Italian food in the former Cavé Vin space in South Minneapolis.
Sometimes the band gets together for a killer hit, sometimes they go off on solo projects and crate magic alone.
Chilango
Jorge Guzmán of Petite León is branching out with new partners to create a Mex-Tex eatery on the shores of Bde Maka Ska, in the former Urban Eatery space. Look for margaritas on the patio by spring (hopefully).
Lynette
Travis Serbus and Ben Siers-Rients are reviving the old Riverview Cafe to create the new vision of neighborhood restaurant. There’s clearly an homage to Lyn65 days, but they’re clearly creating something new.
A few veterans in the industry are finally getting the kitchens they’ve been building toward their whole careers.
Dario
Joe Rolle and Stephen Rowe have teamed up with designer Aaron Wittkamper to create their innovative pasta place in the North Loop’s T3 building. The back room will feature a huge table for ravioli making by day and candlelit seating by night.
Vinai
Yia Vang has many projects to keep him busy, but he’s finally found a spot for his long-awaited full-service Hmong restaurant. The former Dangerous Man brewing site is currently being overhauled to become Vinai sometime next year.
Pink Ivy Kitchen
Michael Shaughnessy, formerly of Young Joni and Advellum, is opening this main street eatery in Hopkins with his wife Viorica next year.
And there’s so much more!
