New to medium format film? Here’s a crash course for you!

So, you’ve already mastered 35mm film photography and feel that you’re now ready to take things to the next level. For most film photographers, that means taking on medium format film. However, as with many things, the first step can be intimidating, and you have to go through the process of learning all over again. But, fret not, as we found a crash course in under nine minutes for you!

Jason Kummerfeldt of grainydays jokingly put together the quick guide above as a reminder in case he gets so drunk he forgets how to shoot medium format film. But, it’s more like a speed run of everything a beginner needs to know to dip their toes into the exciting (yet often expensive) world of this beloved format. Size does matter when it comes to film photography, so the bigger 120 film will give you better, more detailed images than the 35mm film.

To help beginners and intermediate film photographers make the most out of it, Kummerfeldt covered most of the pertinent information about medium format film. These include the different image formats available, 35mm field of view equivalent of lenses, some camera options and of course, how to load a roll into your camera of choice. As a bonus, he also demonstrated how to load film into a camera back, in case you decide to pick up a camera that uses one.
