Neewer CB200C COB Light: Set your lighting free

Looking for some powerful lighting for photography and video in the studio? Then look no further than the new Neewer CB200C COB Light.

Constant lighting has really jumped forwards in leaps and bounds of late, to the point I rarely use my strobes anymore. The new offering from Neewer is incredible; not only does the powerful 200W pack a punch, but the built-in gels and RGB function, as well as the Special FX take your creativity to a whole new level.

Neewer have been around a while now and I honestly believe that these new lights have upped their game.

Out of the box, it’s pretty simple to use. It runs on power, so it’s not really suitable out of the studio, but it’s ready to go once plugged in. This light is quite powerful. You can set it anywhere from 1% to 100%. I have used it for product shoots, behind-the-scenes and setup videos and of course, for portraits. Let’s have a closer look!

Note: Neewer sent the CB200C & SF65Q 65cm Softbox kit to review. However, this is a completely independent review. All thoughts about this light are our own.

Neewer CB200C Versatility

You can adjust the light intensity and the color, I like it set to 5600k. But that is really just a personal choice.

Ergonomics are great. The big stable handle makes it easy to pop on and off light stands and carry around. The fans are super quiet, great for video, but also in the studio in general. I have been using it as a constant light for still-life photography, as well as studio portraits. At 100% it was a bit harsh, but add the quick-release 65cm softbox and it’s a dream. The built-in gels and filters make things so much easier and simpler to use. Want to dial in exactly what color filter or gel, easy, especially with the color picker on the app!

Build quality

Small and sturdy, dials are firm and stable but easily turned. The cable locks in securely and comes out easily. The knobs and switches for rotating the head or mounting on a light stand are really easy and comfortable to use (I have a lot of problems with small fiddly dials with my hands these days). Even the Bowens mount is easy to add and remove modifiers.

Neewer CB200C COB Light: Set your lighting free

Neewer CB200C — Sets you free

Thanks to some innovative technology, this little light might just change the way you see LED lights. Small and compact but very powerful for professional interior lighting (or possibly external if there is a power source handy). Great for video (or even livestreaming) as well as product/portrait photography. Versatile and adaptable to whatever you want to use it for. And the best part, simple to use. With the addition of a softbox, it had beautiful diffused light. The adaptability of this light is incredible.

Mounting

I mounted mine on a light stand, it has a standard thread. You could mount it on a boom arm as well. The Bowens mount for reflectors meant I could use any of my current light modifiers.

Setup

It’s so simple to use. Place it on a light stand, and plug in power. Flick the power switch and you’re good to go. Adjust the dials for power and color temp. Add a reflector or softbox and shoot. It’s that simple. I used it for a Studio portrait session with 65cm SF65Q quick-release octobox.

The Neewer SF65Q

The Neewer SF65Q is a quick-release parabolic softbox. The quick-release function does exactly what it says. No longer do you have to fit with your softboxes and get frustrated and leave it set up, as it takes too long to pack up and set up again. This new 65cm softbox is set up in seconds and is a joy to use. It comes with a grid and a beauty dish insert, as well as a white diffuser cover. It also creates beautiful soft light to work with, just gorgeous for portraits. Also, it comes with a great carry bag.

Neewer CB200C & SF65Q— A terrific lighting additions to the studio

I used this in the studio for both portraits and still-life photography. I was super impressed with how good it was and how easy it was to use. It is a terrific light to add to my studio. I placed a 65cm softbox in front, using the Bowens mount to soften the light, and it was running on 50% of power output for the portrait shots required. That’s still pretty impressive. The fact that it is so small, lightweight and easy to use is a big plus for me. The price is also really good for what you get and affordable for many photographers.

Available from Neewer and B&H, as is the SF65Q softbox.
