Fuco Ueda | Japanese Surrealist Painter

About Fuco Ueda

Fuco Ueda was born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1979 and graduated from the Tokyo Polytechnic University of Arts Graduate School in 2003. Her art is rich in animals and plants, recalling her hometown. Growing up on a farm in the countryside, there were more animals than humans. Fuco starts painting as a child to then get into art high school. Learning the basics of oil painting, sculpture, Japanese painting, and design, she then pursued the College of Art and Design.

Art & Creative Technique

Fuco creates her warm and surrealist paintings thanks to acrylics and powdered mineral pigments on paper, cloth, and wood, which give her artworks a refined, delicate touch and softness with references to her Japanese traditions.

She gets inspiration from Ukyio prints and the work of Japanese female artists and writers. A special eye goes to the revolution of the manga scene, with young girls in the 1970’s as the focal core. Her paintings depict imaginary springs saturated by the vibrant colors of flora and fauna. Ueda depicts her girls in suggestive poses, during a scene where time is suspended and the space loses its consistency. Her creative process starts by spending time changing scenes and scenarios inside her head as in a movie.
As the image gets more definite, she goes on depicting it with acrylic paint. She mixes the acrylic paint with Gofun, an opaque white pigment made from pulverized high-quality oyster shells.
