Derek Hough has broken his silence following his wife’s second brain surgery. Hayley Erbert underwent cranioplasty surgery, and it was successful!
“With immense relief, gratitude, and overwhelming joy I’d like to share that Hayley’s cranioplasty surgery has been successfully completed as planned,” Hough wrote in an Instagram post featuring a photo of himself bedside in the hospital.
“My sincere appreciation goes to the exceptional medical team,” he continued, adding, “Their expertise and steady hands were pivotal in this journey, ensuring a smooth and successful surgery. Especially Dr. Mai who not only performed the surgery but was also the one who saved her life 2 weeks ago.”
Derek Hough Breaks Silence On Wife’s Second Surgery
Derek Hough first announced in mid-December that his wife was hospitalized for a cranial hematoma and underwent an emergency craniectomy.
An intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull that creates pressure on the brain, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Hayley now underwent her second cranioplasty surgery, which is a neurosurgical procedure designed to repair or reshape irregularities or imperfections in the skull. Cranioplasty is often recommended following a traumatic injury or to correct a birth defect. During surgery, the skull bones are repaired using either a bone graft or synthetic material.
“We are profoundly touched by the outpouring of support and prayers from each of you,” the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ alum continued in his social media post on Thursday following his wife’s second surgery. “Your thoughts, prayers, and positive energy have been a source of strength and comfort for us during this challenging time. It’s truly heartwarming to know how much love and care surrounds us.”
Hayley Erbert’s Second Surgery Marks ‘Significant Milestone’
Hayley Erbert was recently seen wearing a helmet to protect her skull where the craniectomy occurred prior to her second surgery. Luckily, the surgery went well and “marks a significant milestone” in her journey, according to Hough.
“Your support has played a crucial role in getting us here,” he wrote, adding, “We are filled with hope and optimism for the future, knowing she is on the path to a full recovery, surrounded by such a loving community.”
“Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for standing with us,” he concluded.
Derek Hough first announced his wife’s medical emergency on December 7 when he took to social media, sharing, “At the end of last night’s tour performance in Washington, D.C., my wife Hayley became disoriented and was taken to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy. She is in stable condition.”
A cranial hematoma occurs when blood collects in the skull. “I want to thank the first responders and medical personnel who have cared for and continue to care for her. I ask for your prayers and positivity during this time,” Hough added.
