Cottagecore portraits: A springtime dream

Cottagecore portraits: A springtime dream

Embrace the charm of nature with cottagecore photography.

Spring is the perfect time to capture the essence of nature’s beauty. With its blooming flowers, lush greenery, and warm sunlight, it’s the ideal backdrop for a cottage core photoshoot. I have been waiting to dive into it all Winter, but now that Spring has hit Down Under, I am keen to dive in. Perhaps this will inspire you to try an Autumn version or start getting your ideas together for a shoot next Spring.

What is Cottagecore?

Cottagecore is a lifestyle trend that celebrates simplicity, rural living, and a connection to nature. It’s characterized by cozy knit sweaters, floral dresses, and a love for gardening, baking and being out in nature. When applied to photography, cottagecore evokes a sense of nostalgia, peace, and tranquillity. But that doesn’t mean you can’t put your own spin on it. Like pretty floral dresses and horses out in the paddock, like with Eliza.

Springtime Cottagecore portrait ideas

I went to a local Botanic Garden with my model Andrea and a few simple props. We had a cute little blue wicker basket, some books, apples, fake flowers and this straw hat. I dressed Andrea in a simple peasant top and brown skirt and added a denim jacket for a pop of colour against all the green, as it was still quite chilly.

  1. Picnic in the park: A classic cottage core scene, a picnic in a picturesque park is a must-have. Pack a basket filled with homemade treats, lay out a checkered blanket, and enjoy the sunshine.
  2. Flower fields: Spring is the season of blooming flowers. Find a field of your favorite flowers, such as tulips, daisies, or sunflowers, and capture your portrait amidst the vibrant colors.
  3. Garden portraits: If you have a garden, take advantage of your own backyard oasis. Pose among the blooming flowers, surrounded by greenery, and let the natural beauty shine through.
  4. Forest adventures: Venture into a nearby forest for a more adventurous cottage core shoot. Explore the trails, climb a tree, or simply sit on a fallen log and soak in the natural surroundings.
  5. Cozy interiors: Bring the cottage core aesthetic indoors by capturing portraits in a cozy living room or bedroom. Use soft lighting, natural textures, and vintage decor to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  6. Look for simple settings to capture the cottage core vibes; a park bench, flowers, a lovely tree, lake. Take advantage of the pretty scenery and take some pulled-back shots as well as full-body and close-ups.

Tips for cottagecore portraits

  • Choose soft natural lighting. Avoid harsh direct sunlight and opt for soft, diffused light. This will create a dreamy and ethereal look.
  • Wear flowing floral dresses. Embrace the cottage core aesthetic with feminine and flowing dresses. Consider adding a floral crown or a woven basket to complete the look. Or at least a rustic-inspired outfit and neutral colors.
  • Incorporate natural elements. Use props like wildflowers, fruits, and vintage teacups to add a touch of cottage core charm to your photos.
  • Focus on the details. Pay attention to the details, such as your hair and makeup. Keep it simple and natural, using soft tones and earthy colors.

While sadly it was a little wet when I did both shoots, I am keen to get back out into fields of bluebells or lavender soon. By embracing the cottage core aesthetic, you can create stunning and timeless portraits that capture the essence of spring and even autumn colour.
