Capturing the magic of animals in your photoshoots

Animals add an undeniable charm to photographs, whether it’s a playful pup, a majestic horse, or a sleek cat. Their presence injects a sense of life and connection into an image. But working with animals on a photoshoot presents a unique set of challenges and considerations.

Here’s a glimpse into the world of animal photography, focusing on the delightful (and sometimes slightly chaotic) aspects of working with dogs, cats, and horses alongside human models. I recently ran two photoshoots with a variety of animals on a local farm.

Understanding the species

Dogs: These loyal companions are often eager to please and readily take direction, especially with positive reinforcement. However, their boundless energy might require breaks and redirection to maintain focus. Anticipate their needs by having treats and toys on hand, and ensure a comfortable environment with ample water.

Cats: These independent creatures march to the beat of their own drum. Patience is key! Creating a calm and familiar setting for them is crucial. Lure them with enticing toys or treats, but respect their boundaries if they seem stressed. Capture their natural beauty in candid moments. Sometimes you just have to let cats…be cats.

Horses: These majestic animals inspire awe and require a respectful approach. Experienced handlers are essential for ensuring both the horse’s and model’s safety. Plan your shots carefully, considering the horse’s temperament and movement. Stunning portraits can be achieved with the horse standing or walking calmly.

Working with models

When incorporating animals into a shoot, clear communication with the model is vital. Do they have experience with animals? Are they comfortable around the specific species involved? A relaxed model creates a more natural interaction with the animal.

Preparation is key

  • Animal wranglers or trainers: For safety and efficient shoots, especially with horses or nervous animals, enlist the help of experienced professionals.
  • Treats and toys: Positive reinforcement is key for keeping your furry (or feathered) subjects engaged and happy.
  • Familiar surroundings: If possible, conduct the shoot in a familiar environment for the animals to minimize stress.
  • Patience and flexibility: Animals have their own agendas. Be prepared to adapt your schedule and capture those fleeting moments of magic.

The rewards

The effort of working with animals on a photoshoot is undeniably outweighed by the unique and heartwarming results. The bond between animal and human translates beautifully into the photographs, creating an emotional connection with the viewer. These images transcend simple portraiture; they tell stories of companionship, trust, and the beauty of the animal-human connection.

So, the next time you’re planning a photoshoot, consider adding an animal element. With careful planning, respect for the animals, and a touch of patience, you can capture stunning and heartwarming images that celebrate the special bond between humans and the creatures we share our world with.
