With the increasingly lively schedule of a spring art season in New York that feels like it’s finally finding its pacing again, attention and anticipation once again turns to the opening of this year’s edition of Frieze New York, set to open its doors in just a few days at its new home at The Shed. With the fair now nearing 10 years of operation in the city, this year’s edition should once again prove to be a strong note in the spring fair season.

Having opened the door on its new location with a packed proceeding and impressive appointments, the fair will return to Hudson Yards with another outing that spans the wide range of contemporary art, featuring over 65 major galleries with a strong representation from New York, celebrating the creative spirit of the city. At Pace Gallery, artist Latifa Echakhch will come off her impressive staging at the Swiss Pavilion in Venice to install a solo booth, while at Thaddaeus Ropac, one will be able to view a range of works from the gallery roster, including pieces by Robert Rauschenberg, Alex Katz, and Tom Sachs. At Gagosian, the gallery will feature works by artist Albert Oehlen. The booth will feature a vending machine offering Kafftee/Cofftea, a hybrid coffee/tea beverage developed by Oehlen in collaboration with Aqua Monaco, and four paintings from 2014 that reinforce the presentation’s commercial theme.

The fair will also return its Frame section, dedicated to representing a range of galleries that have operated for 10 years or less. At Edouard Montassut, the gallery will be presenting a series of works by media artist Ivan Cheng, continuing a recent practice dealing with language and driven by relations with collaborators and hosts. At Lomex, Kye Christensen-Knowles will present new work, while at Chateau Shatto, one can view a selection of works by painter Emma McIntyre.

Continuing in its tradition of ambitious and dynamic programming that highlights New York City’s arts scene in close dialogue and exchange with the broader global arts community, Frieze New York always offers a unique opportunity for new conversations and fascinating programming choices. This year should be no different, and should make for an engaging opportunity to explore and discover new work.
The fair closes May 22nd.
