‘Superman & Lois’ Handed Down Season 4 Renewal, ‘Gotham Knights’ Canceled at The CW

The CW has made decisions on its remaining bubble shows for its upcoming 2023-24 season. Three shows that were still awaiting decisions on renewal or cancelation were the DC Comics-based shows “Superman & Lois” and “Gotham Knights,” along with “All American: Homecoming.” Per The Hollywood Reporter, the network opted to renew “Superman & Lois” for a fourth season, and “All American” spinoff “All American: Homecoming” will return for its third. Meanwhile, the other DC Comics-based television series, “Gotham Knights,” has been canceled after one season.

The CW’s renewed shows from its 2022-2023 lineup now include “Superman & Lois,” “All American: Homecoming,” its parent series “Homecoming,” and “Walker.” Additionally, THR notes that “Superman & Lois” will have a shorter run for its fourth season, with ten episodes instead of 13. Meanwhile, “All American” will air with 13 episodes for its third season instead of 15, which it had for its sophomore run.

Based on the iconic DC comics and characters, “Superman & Lois” is a comic book superhero drama starring Tyler Hoechlin (“Teen Wolf”) as Clark Kent/Superman and Elizabeth Tulloch (“Grimm”) as Lois Lane. The show originated as a spinoff of the “Supergirl” television series and part of DC and CW’s “Arrrow-verse.” Heochlin and Tulloch carried over in their roles. They originated in “Supergirl” and “The Flash” shows.

The series debuted on The CW in February 2021 and has since run for three seasons and 41 episodes. The show’s Season 3 finale is slated to air on June 27. The Season 4 renewal will take the show to 53 episodes. The series was The CW’s most-watched show of the season but was also the most expensive to produce for the network. The show was developed for television by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing.

THR notes that the reduced episode orders are due to new CW owners Nexstar attempting to minimize costs with smaller episode runs and other reductions to make the network profitable by 2025.

DC’s “Gotham Knights” still has two episodes left to air, with the series finale scheduled for June 27. The series was developed for television by Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash, and James Stoteraux. Set in Gotham City, it follows young members of the Batman family as they attempt to protect the city following the death of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. The series starred Oscar Morgan as Turner Hayes, the adopted Son of Bruce Wayne and a student at Gotham Academy. Turner Hayes is an original character created for the show.

“Gotham Knights” also stars Navia Robinson as Carrie Kelley, aka Robin, Anna Lore as Stephanie Brown, who became both Batgirl and Robin in the comics, and “Supernatural” star Misha Collins as Harvey Dent, the district attorney of Gotham City destined to become Two-Face.

Berlanti Productions was a producer on all three shows above. The company co-produced all the DC Comics series on The CW, including “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” and “Black Lightning.” DC’s “The Flash” ended after its ninth season, which aired last month. The show ran for 184 episodes. “Arrow” ran for eight seasons and 170 episodes. “Black Lightning” ended after four seasons and 58 episodes.

“Supergirl” moved to The CW after its first season aired on CBS. The show ran for six seasons and 126 episodes, concluding in November 2021. The show introduced the “Arrow-verse” versions of Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
