The start of the year is always seen as a fresh start for everyone. For photographers, it’s the perfect time to start (or restart) projects, try something new or explore a new place to shoot. But it’s not the same for everyone, and even the most prolific creatives feel unmotivated once in a while. If you’re currently in this situation as an uninspired street photographer, here’s something for you.
Faizal Westcott sums up some of the most important things street photographers should keep in mind when they’re in this unproductive phase of their creative life. “Creativity is not linear, it ebbs and flows,” he reminds us, so we don’t feel so disheartened about not having the drive to create new work. Acknowledge that you’re in a creative rut, but don’t dwell on it.
Likewise, it’s okay to take a break, so don’t feel guilty if you have to put your camera down for a week or a month. Or as long as you need. But Westcott also suggests taking this time to remaster your old work, organize your files, or evaluate your creative process. This way, when you’re finally ready to make a fresh start, you’ll be seeing your work and creative direction with fresher eyes.
