What keeps you excited in the studio?
I like the struggle to get ideas and develop them into paintings using a variety of mediums. Trying to get unseen ideas visible using abstraction and metaphors. I cannot seem to stop and just find the whole process of creating energizing and healing.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I’ve always done art. But I always felt I was falling short so I kept it to myself while I taught at an international school. There was a moment when I felt called to turn to creating art related to my faith and that coincided with learning about mixed media options and I loved all the possibilities and tried all sorts of approaches. Now it seems my work is more identifiably mine, although with many variations.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
I think art should provoke questions and encourage deeper reflection

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Be patent! Keep following your curiosity and look for and at all kinds of art

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Yes and no. When I was in my 20’s I thought “I need more life experience to make more meaningful art.” I think I was much more worried about techniques early on and now the reason for creating art seems to trump my idea of perfect art. So definitely travel ,observing much more art, and living in different parts of the world greatly enriched my art-making.

What can we look forward to from you next?
It’s new all the time! I seem to circle around themes as well as the mediums I choose for different series that come to mind in smal and large bursts of inspiration. Right now I’m back to using oil and cold wax and greatly desire working on much larger panels.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
It’s such a relief to know that I still am driven to create and even wonder if I have time to finish the ideas I have NOW let alone the ones that will come to me later! I know I will not stop. Maybe slower, but I just have to do it.
