What keeps you excited in the studio?
So much! My work explores the decorative rhythm of my (new to me) local landscape. My focus is observing and expressing the ephemeral nature of agriculture and estuary habitats. I like to create surfaces that have been distressed, and reconstructed, and in that ongoing practice, encrypt time and transience.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
My trajectory is really a re-emergence from ‘artist interrupted’, as I was not regularly painting for years instead focusing on surface and graphic design. Since retiring and relocating my practice and development of work has been an exciting jet-fueled trajectory.
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
Always crucial… but the current ‘major’ art scene, art fairs etc. are of no interest to me.
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Paint /Create /Make for yourself. Try not to compare oneself with others especially on social media, instead, read and look at art history!
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age is only interesting in art when it is important to the context of the work.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I’m looking for a gallery venue, in the meantime I will be participating in the SLO County Open Studio Tour once again this October
