What keeps you excited in the studio?
Continuing to explore geometric compositions and color combinations keeps me excited. I like to produce one of a kind patterns that require some study to gain a perspective of what the viewer is actually seeing.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
I recently studied color theory in France with a very knowledgeable instructor, and i feel it made a positive impact on my paintings. I now have the knowledge to use hues and values i previously did not want to use. I have more mastery over composition, and more confidence in how to build a series and set goals.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
I just read an article that the non-profit arts sector in Kansas City brings in 685 million dollars to our local economy each year. In addition, 4,500 jobs exist in the arts in KC, which supports 4,500 families. I painted a series on alcoholism, and i have been able to give artist talks and join group shows. The amount of people that have opened up to me about their struggles and successes with alcoholism has been profound. I have received so many thank you’s for providing a forum where it’s ok to discuss this topic which is kept as a secret in so many families.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Create from your heart, not to get in a show or a gallery. Use your life experiences to inspire your work. Be your own encourager, dont wait on others. Have a strong belief in your creative abilities and know that the world needs what you create.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Yes! Older artists have layers upon layers of life experiences. From joy to depression and everything in between. We have seen a lot, and we are fearless due to our age. We feel free to express ourselves like never before in our lives, and we have rich stories to tell.

What can we look forward to from you next?
A strong geometric series that is exciting and unique. Im hoping to present the series to different organizations that i feel may benefit from a unique persoective.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
At my age i have everything i need, so i can produce art that means something to me. This gives clarity to the work. I can share freely because at my age we are tough and thick skinned. If you enjoy my art fine, if you dont orefer it thats fine too. But the joy it gives me makes me a better human being.
