Fiona Maher
Midlothian TX
Age 62
What keeps you excited in the studio?
Having the freedom to play and test ideas , explore new materials and indulge my inner child.
Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
In a zig zag line and still developing
What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
As a catalyst for change , and showing different ways of looking and understanding the world . We are radical ( making things with our hands and our imagination ) .
What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Keep doing what makes you happy , you may need to do other things to earn a crust , but keep your arts practice live .
Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
No, I don’t think so – I challenge a lot of perceptions about women of ‘my age’ – Life experience does inform what I do and how I do it , and I’m still learning.
What can we look forward to from you next?
I’m not quite sure … I’m on a journey and where I’m going still surprises me .
Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
I feel at this time in my life I feel free of other constraints that were present in my life as a younger woman and I am able to devote my time 100% to my art , I don’t have much income , but I don’t need much …
