Alex Butler (Ballotta)
Los Angeles CA
Age 62

What keeps you excited in the studio?
The prospect of creating the cryptic language of art that somehow makes sense.

Looking back at your trajectory as an artist, how would you say your work has developed?
My artwork has become less literal and more abstract.

What role do you think the artist has in today’s society?
To provide an escape route.

What’s the most important advice you could give to an aspiring artist?
Don’t plan too much, just start creating.

Does age matter in art? Why or why not?
Age and life experience add layers of complexity and wisdom.

What can we look forward to from you next?
I want to create art on a very large scale.

Is there anything else you would like to share about being an artist later in life?
I would like to bring together a group of older artists to celebrate, commiserate and collaborate.
